AARP will present its 18th annual Movies for Grownups Awards on Feb. 4 in Beverly Hills with MAARP The Magazine announced the nominees for its 18th annual Movies for Grownups Awards today and among the standouts are three nominations for Jon Chu's Crazy Rich Asians, a pair of nods for Ryan Coogler's Black Panther and a surprise four nominations for Kenneth Branagh's All is True, a film that had not yet gained much traction during awards season.
The latter pic — Branagh's take on the final days of William Shakespeare — scored mentions for best director, best supporting actress (Judi Dench), best supporting actor (Ian McKellen), and best grownup love story. Speaking of surprises, Sandra Bullock, who toplines Netflix's buzzworthy Bird Box, will compete in the lead actress category against Glenn Close (The Wife), Viola Davis (Widows), Nicole Kidman (Destroyer) and Julia Roberts (Ben Is Back).
In the best actor category, nominees include Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Hugh Jackman (The Front Runner), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), Robert Redford (The Old Man & the Gun), John C. Reilly (Stan & Ollie). In the other top category — best picture/movie for grownups — the nominees include A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Green Book and Roma.
Crazy Rich Asians received noticed for supporting actress for Michelle Yeoh, best ensemble film and best intergenerational film. Black Panther will compete in the best ensemble category as well — against Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, The Front Runner, and Widows — in addition to scoring a nod for supporting actress for Angela Bassett.
Martin Short is booked to host the star-packed awards show, taking place Feb. 4 at the Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills hotel in the 90210. (The show will be taped to air Feb. 15 at 9 p.m. on PBS.)
